Introduction (What is Regulus?)

Regulus is a continent of a fictional fantasy world. This continent and fantasy world will be located in a story that will be written in the future. Right now, the world and its story are still in the early stages of development, so much of what is on this website will be changed later.

Regulus has three kingdoms: Iasagar, Rhytemar and the Far Lands.

The story is within the fantasy, mystery and adventure genres, but also contains horror elements and, surprisingly, sci-fi elements.

History

Due to dangerous circumstances on Earth, the most important individuals were brought on a spaceship to travel to ensure their safety and farm animals were brought along for food. While they were in space, an outlandish entity with peculiar powers sneaked in their spaceship and disguised as one of them (with the original being dead). Needing offspring for its goals, it seduced the humans on the ship, made children, and killed the individuals that were pure humans.

The entity desired to play god on a habitable planet and wanted to control its inhabitants, which was the main motivation for infiltrating the spaceship. It brought its offspring to a habitable planet and controls their lives through a cult, manipulation and propaganda. However, it first had to erase the previous inhabitant on the planet, the previous inhabitants were extremely hostile and wouldn't worship her, so the entity simply solved by erasing each of them. The entity’s offspring are brought to a certain part of the planet, which is now called Regulus, but the other parts of the planet have been severely destructed and cannot be restored or habitable. The name of the entity is Descent.

Fearmongering

To ensure nobody will try to go further than Regulus, a fear of the ocean has been ingrained in everyone’s mind by making people see their loved one die in the ocean, characters of the stories in theatres often dying in the ocean or by posters or newspapers containing accidents related to the ocean. Any form of entertainment (already mentioned theatres) contains propaganda to ensure nobody goes into the ocean. Whoever dares to go in the ocean will be deemed crazy and whoever questions authority will also be deemed crazy or something problematic (e.g. a cannibalist), even though it’s completely unrelated. The entity has many human followers due to forming a cult. When it comes to spreading hate, any form of hate is spread through the same way a fear of the ocean is spread. An organisation named Goupil is created by the entity to order its followers to carry out tasks and to basically keep people controlled.

Origin of the three kingdoms

Rhytemar and Iasagar used to be one large kingdom called Keitan, but eventually got divided due to Iasagar progressing socially faster, while Rhytemar progressed faster economically. Rhytemerans saw themselves as technically superior, and Iasagarians saw themselves as morally superior, causing the two groups to feel distant from each other. In addition, the leader of Keitan, Uthyr, was very authoritarian and imperious, most Iasagarians did not like him, while many Rhytemerans followed him with pleasure. In the meantime, the Far Lands are yet to be discovered, and the majority of the island the Keitans were on was also undiscovered. People were reluctant to explore the only other island across the one they were on, despite the small distance, but some brave adventurers crossed the ocean despite their fears and created a civilization there.

The adventurers consisted of mostly Rhytemerans, but there were also some Iasagarians among them. The temperature of the island they were on was a lot colder and the island is a lot flatter than the other island, having not a single mountain, though it did have a lot of caves. The entity who created Regulus, whose name is Descent, did not like the fact that the adventurers dared to cross the ocean, even though it was such a small distance, because they might dare to go even further in the future, and made the Far Lands extremely dangerous as a warning. It bred with its hostile creatures and made the offspring stronger due to the powers they inherit from Descent. Due to this, Farlandians have grown extremely cautious and paranoid of their surroundings. The Far Lands are called the Far Lands even though the distance is small, because crossing the ocean seemed impossible to Iasagarians and Rhytemerans.

A bit after the Far Lands have developed, Iasagar and Rhytemar are having war, due to most Iasagarians opposing the leader of Keitan, Uthyr, which Uthyr does not like and therefore was the one who started the war. The Far Lands stayed neutral, but saw a way to profit from the war: They sold weapons to both sides, which did worsen the amount of violence in the war, but it also helped The Far Lands develop more due to the extra resources.

Magic

The people of Regulus believe that a gargantuan (it means huge :/) and stupendous glowing tree in a cave full of glowing plants is the source of magic, but in reality, the tree does not grant any magic at all, it just looks impressive, that’s all. The real source of the magic is Descent’s DNA that is in the people of Regulus. Descent is an entity with many powers, so it’s only natural that most of its offspring also have powers, though you have to work hard to awaken those powers. Only few people become mages and the rest become warriors and rangers instead. The entity sees those who don’t awaken their magic as ‘disabled’ and thus most of its followers look down on people without magic.

Factions

The factions are groups in which each specialises in one thing. Every individual from a faction carries out tasks given by leaders of the individual’s respective kingdom or by the higher-ups from the individual’s respective faction.

Warriors Mages Rangers
Protect citizens No specialisation in a certain task. Carry out the same tasks as other factions. Enforce and uphold order and nature
Average priority More priority because magic could have high impact Lower priority
High difficulty (training) Highest difficulty (training) Average difficulty (training)

The factions are not really divided from each other, however mages usually see themselves as superior, while warriors and rangers see them as snobs. Friendships between warriors and rangers are very common, while it is rare for a mage to be friends with a warrior or ranger. Though the Mage Faction in general is willing to cooperate with the other factions.

Behind the scenes, the Mage Faction is heavily affiliated with Goupil (Descent’s organisation), with the higher-ups of the Mage Faction being the same higher-ups of Goupil.

Furthermore, the Mage Faction basically functions as a cult, beating mages into submission by making them work their asses off for no reward, gaslighting them, manipulating them, keeping them under fear, and making them extremely dependent on the faction. Favouritism is also prevalent. Speaking about cults…

Goupil

Goupil is a large part of the story, so to summarise, Goupil is seen as a terrorist organisation by Iasagar and the Far Lands, while Rhytemar is fond of Goupil. Many Farlanders are also fond of Goupil despite the way it’s deemed. Goupil does not fight for freedom, in fact, it does the opposite and restricts freedom of others instead. Descent intentionally caused Goupil to be deemed as a terrorist organisation to instil fear into others. Goupil’s goal is to develop magic and ascertain that everyone will have magic. It achieves this by experimenting onto mages, these experiments often being dangerous, and by killing those who lack magic.

In Descent’s cult, children are trained to the extremes to awaken magic and are taught to worship Descent.

Synopsis of story

Regulus follows two types of perspectives: that of the resistance to Goupil and that of Goupil's members. The first is called “Resistance” and the second is called “Renegade. The following two pages contain the synopses of both parts.

Resistance

Resistance follows four people: two childhood friends working as loan sharks, a pessimistic and gambling-addicted vagabond trying to give her cousin a stable life, and a mageless prince of the most prosperous kingdom. While each appears to have different intentions, the goals of each person appear to be in opposition to the terrorist organization and sect Goupil, and they find themselves in a situation where they must cooperate. In addition to Goupil, the usurers and vagabond also have financial problems they must deal with, while the prince will have to experience fierce conflict with his relatives and loved ones.

Renegade

Renegade follows four members of the terrorist organization and cult Goupil. First you have the co-leader of Goupil, who has a warm and charismatic exterior, but really only prizes power and lust. He took the chance to become caretaker of the crown princess and prince of the most prosperous kingdom after their parents died. As a result, the crown princess has also become part of Goupil, and this story will also follow her, she is arrogant, has a silver tongue and has many prejudices against minorities. The other two members followed in the story have somewhat less status. One member is an impulsive criminal who does not give a damn about the rules, and the other is one of the most skilled mages and has a fairly rational character, but follows every command of Goupil without question like a program. She would prefer to be as far away from the manipulative heiress and impulsive criminal as possible. A resistance against Goupil is initialized, some of those who start a resistance turn out to be former members, and thus renegades against Goupil.

Will Goupil achieve its goals? Will the members of Goupil improve their morals or become the worst versions of themselves?
